On July 15, 2013 and the following three days, we had and won four debates in the 9th Shanghai Senior High School Students English Debate, including the final. The team representing WFLMS consisted of five students, Louisa Liu, Raven Luo, Simon Chen, Yolanda Qiu and me, guided and advised by two charming teachers, Shen Xuyan and You Yusi.
Please take a quick look at our schedule: getting up at 7 am, debates at 1 pm, horror movies at 2 pm, preparation at 8 pm, and going to bed at 3 am. However, those days were more attractive in retrospect, because as Milan Kundera put it, now what was tiring had disappeared and only the beauty remained.
It was worth it because we enjoyed ourselves before, during and after each competition. And hereby I give a list of our motions and sides for the four debates: Students should be free to choose their major after they enter college, opposition. Celebrities breaking a law should receive harsher punishments, proposition. Standardized tests do more harm than good in the education of students, opposition. We should allow endangered species to go extinct, proposition. I wouldn’t say that we had the best luck in getting our motions and sides, but with much assist of our teachers, we always managed to find the essence of each topic and our best hit to our opponents.
One of the sentimental moments of our stay might’ve been the third day, when both sides, including the host, were WFLMS alumni. And on the awarding ceremony, when Louisa proposed all WFLMS alumni present sing the school song together, more than a dozen of students from different schools rose and joined with pride. We are grateful to have gone to this contest, made acquaintances with students from top schools and had unforgettable memories.
Accompanied by milk-tea menu, Indian accent, intriguing video, and our mascot, WFLMS teddy, we made it to the last and reaped the laurels.
